Three things to pray for

You guys, our dear Dwija’s in the hospital as her water broke yesterday at 32 weeks. Please pray for her and her wee little girl! And the rest of the family!

Secondly, I know you’ve all heard about the sweet, brave Missionaries of Charity who were handcuffed and shot in Yemen. Stories and pictures about them were being tagged yesterday on FB and Twitter and IG with #TheseSistersHaveNames, which is so appropriate — we know the power of names and their humanizing effect. Knowing their names helps us never forget them. Sr. Anselm, Sr. Reginette, Sr. Marguerite/Margherite (I’ve seen both), and Sr. Judith (a new and wonderful patron for any Judiths!), please pray for us and for the whole world. ❤

This is the prayer the Missionaries of Charity pray “after their morning Mass and before breakfast, the prayer is one of the last that the sisters would have prayed before being killed”:

“Lord, teach me to be generous. Teach me to serve you as you deserve; to give and not to count the cost, to fight and not to heed the wounds, to toil and not to seek for rest, to labor and not to ask for reward.”

A friend sent this prayer to me yesterday as appropriate for my third intention: though it certainly pales in comparison to the kinds of suffering the Missionaries of Charity see and tend to, and to actual martyrdom for one’s faith, there’s a stomach bug that won’t leave my house, and I know a lot of you are dealing with it too (I hope you’re all feeling better Jen!). My #4, who I thought was on the upswing after spending the entire day throwing up two days ago did so again last night. It’s everywhere. My task for this morning is to clean it up (I was too tired last night). Please pray for my little boys (four out of the six have now had it … I’m waiting for the other two, and please God not myself [my husband doesn’t get stomach bugs, such a weirdo]) and for me and for all the parents and little ones dealing with the the stomach bug right now. I seriously think someone needs to start an Order of Sisters whose mission is to care for families with the stomach bug. Great personal risk? Check. Ostracization? Check. Suffering and sickness? Check, check, checkity check. If anyone has any daughters who want to start a new Order when they grow up, maybe whisper this idea in their ears. (I truly hope this doesn’t come across as insensitive in the face of the lost Sisters of Yemen. It’s because of their wonderful work and love and care that I immediately thought of Sisters when I was in the throes of cleaning and disinfecting our house over the last few days — they do such wonderful, important work, in big ways and small. Thank God for Sisters.)

  1. Praying for Dwija and her baby!!

    When I heard about the Missionaries of Charity my heart broke! Thankfully, Fr. James Martin has been posting about them and has always included their names in his posts. I think it’s so important to remember their names because without the names, it de-humanizes them in a way and makes it seem very distant and far away.

    That’s also the prayer of St. Ignatius of Loyola 🙂 We pray it in Mass at my school every week (or at least we’re supposed to, sometimes the priest forgets). Usually there is a last line that says “save that I know I am doing your will” which is actually my favorite line in the prayer.

    Also, praying for your family and all the families who are struggling with the stomach bug right now. Thankfully that has yet to hit my campus and we just have a super nasty cold going around. Hopefully no one brings back the stomach bug from Spring Break, which starts next week.

    I also do not think you were being insensitive 🙂

  2. Prayers all around!

    If I may add a prayer intention, I’ve been getting terrible headaches behind one eye for several days. I’m going to go to the eye doctor and see if it’s related to straining to see. I hope it’s not an “MRI-required” sort of thing because I’m very claustrophobic and don’t want to get one! But I know sometimes they do them with unusual recurring headaches to see the cause. 😁

  3. Praying for everyone’s intentions.

    I saw the names of the sisters early on and thought they were so beautiful. It did make me think of our Judith discussion here as well as the Regina one. Have not heard the variant, Reginette, but think that is really pretty. Such beautiful women. There is a group of Missionaries of Charity here and I have gotten to know them as they live at the parish where our homeschool group meets. All so wonderful and selfless. Breaks my heart.

    • I didn’t even think of Regina when I read Reginette! Of course! I was thinking Reginald, so funny the things-in-plain-sight I miss sometimes. So great that you know some Sisters of that Order.

  5. Joining all of you in prayer. I had not heard about Dwija and the babe- I have been reading her blog for a few years now and would love to meet her in person one day. Praying her and baby girl are doing alright.
    The Missionaries of Charity Sisters murders are just another outrage. Honestly, after it happened I heard more than one priest suggesting it is now time for another crusade…

  6. I’m thinking of and praying hard for Dwija, her baby and the family.I was born at 32 weeks myself and I know how traumatic it was for my parents.

    I’d heard of the murders in Yemen, but little more. Learning their names here and seeing their photos on the site you linked to really brought home the horror of it for me.

    I hope everybody is well again at your house soon!

  8. Prayers for your stomach bug hit family!

    We’ve been hit by some terrible cough epidemic. And by “we” I mean my family, my office, and half of singapore. What a Lent I’ve been having so far 😛 #physicalmortifications
