I also wanted to ask you all about the name Timmarie. I’ve seen it from time to time here and there — only on older women — and again today, the members of my parish who died on this date were remembered by name, and one was Timmarie (she died in the early 80s). Every time I see Timmarie, I think it’s so similar to Emery in rhythm and sound, and I wonder why parents today aren’t using it? Is it because it’s an obvious mashup of Tim and Marie, which is a little out of step with today’s naming? I searched through the SSA database and it didn’t make the top 1000 in any year, and I searched the 2018 births and the 1910 births and it didn’t appear there (or as the spelling Timarie). Do you any of you know any Timmaries? What do you think of the name?

  1. I think Timmarie/Timarie is cute. I just worry it could be confusing to pronounce, especially the spelling with only one M. I have a friend named Limary and it’s pronounced “Lee-Mary” but so many people call her “Lim-Mary” or “Lim-A-Ree” and it drives her crazy.

  2. Not familiar with Timarie but immediately reminded of Emmarie which Abby just blogged about as it entered the top 1000 last year. So perhaps if Emmarie catches on other Marie smushes might too.

  5. I wonder if it’s actually Ti Marie, from Petite Marie or little Marie. I think it was fairly common to put ‘Ti for Petit or Petite in front of given names in Creole French in New Orleans. It could also be that her dad was called Tim and it’s a feminization.

  6. I did a Google search for Timarie with one m and came up with a number of people of all ages, including one who spells it TiMarie. I would bet that it is generally pronounced Tee-Marie instead of Timmery and that it is indeed derived from Petite Marie, “little Marie.” It would come from pidgin French used in the Caribbean and the Creole of New Orleans and is probably most common in French families. Many of those families would have been Catholic.

  8. Hi, My name is Lydia from Ghana. I have a 17th month old sweet, beautiful and strong baby girl with the name Timarie. I am a born Catholic and so are my children.
    I gave my baby girl the name Timarie because I wanted a Christian catholic new name that will fit my baby, and when I came across Timarie, it was as if the name was written down waiting for my baby. I pray she grows in the Lord to fulfill what her maker wants from her. Less I forgot , baby Timarie is a Wednesday born!
